Moving and cannot take the boat

A move is one of the most common reasons people donate a boat. Hauling it across the country rarely makes sense, and selling it on a deadline usually means taking a low offer.

Start early

Pickup timing depends on both sides' availability, sometimes a couple of days, sometimes a couple of weeks. Contact us as soon as you know your moving date so the boat is gone before the truck arrives.

If you have already moved

That is fine. If the boat is accessible and the paperwork is ready, you do not need to be there on pickup day. You can sign documents by mail or electronically where your state allows it.

Registration in two states

If you have registered the boat in your new state or let the old registration lapse, tell us. The title follows the state where the boat is titled, not where you live now.

Why moving a boat rarely pays

Transporting a boat across the country can cost thousands of dollars, plus storage and new registration at the other end. For most boats under 30 feet, that cost is a large share of what the boat is worth. Donating before you move is often the more practical choice.

A moving-week checklist

  • Contact us as soon as you know your moving date
  • Find the title and trailer paperwork before the packers arrive
  • Leave keys and paperwork with a neighbor if you leave first
  • Give notice on your slip or storage
  • Cancel boat insurance after pickup

Military moves

Service members on orders often need a boat gone on short notice. Tell us your report date and we will do what we can to schedule around it.

Questions

Can you pick up the boat after I move out?

Yes. Leave the boat accessible, tell us where the keys and paperwork are, and let the new owner or neighbor know a transporter is coming.

I am moving in two weeks. Is that enough time?

Often, but not always. Call us as soon as possible so we can check transporter availability in your area.

Does moving change my tax deduction?

No. The deduction depends on the donation and the sale, not where you live. Your state income tax treatment may differ, so ask your advisor.

Can I sign paperwork from my new state?

Usually, yes. Many states accept signed titles by mail.

My HOA at the new house does not allow boats. Is that common?

Very. Many donors call for exactly that reason.
