Donate marine engines, parts, and yacht equipment

Repowers and refits leave behind good engines, electronics, toys, and furniture. If it still has value, Boats with Causes can put it to work, from a single outboard to the full list from a yacht refit.

Is my equipment worth donating?

We review every equipment donation case by case. Brand, model, age, hours, and whether it works decide most of the answer. Engines and generators with service records, current-model electronics, and anything still in the box usually qualify.

Complete is better than partial. An outboard with its controls, harness, and propeller, or a generator with its sound shield and panel, is worth far more than the same unit stripped.

A whole refit list can be one donation. Tell us everything that came off the boat and we will tell you which items we can take.

Not sure? Call (888) 228-7320 and describe it. That is often the fastest answer.

How pickup works for equipment

Most equipment is already off the boat by the time you call. A few details make pickup simple. Pickup is free, and timing depends on both sides' availability: sometimes a couple of days, sometimes a couple of weeks.

Palletized or crated
Engines, generators, and appliances travel best strapped to a pallet. Your yard or refit contractor can usually do this.
Still on the boat
If the item has not come off yet, schedule removal with your yard. We pick up once it is out.
Whole refit lots
Send us the list. One pickup can take everything we accept from a single location.
Serial numbers and records
Photos of the data plate and any service records speed up the review and add value.

Paperwork for equipment

Most equipment has no title. Your paperwork is a list of what you donated, with serial numbers where they exist, and a written acknowledgment from Boats with Causes.

Some states title or register outboard motors, and larger tenders are registered boats. Our outboard motor titles guide explains what to look for.

State-by-state rules are in our state guides. Lost the title? Read donating a boat without a title.

The tax deduction

Equipment and parts are not boats, so Form 1098-C does not apply. You receive a written acknowledgment from Boats with Causes listing what you donated.

If your noncash donations total more than $500 for the year, you file IRS Form 8283. Items or groups of similar items worth more than $5,000 usually need a qualified appraisal.

We do not provide tax or legal advice. Consult your own advisor.

Marine equipment donation questions

Is there a minimum value?

No fixed minimum. We review each donation case by case and tell you quickly whether we can take it.

Can you take a whole refit list at once?

Yes. Send the list and photos, and one pickup can take everything we accept.

The engine came off a boat I already sold. Is that a problem?

No. Equipment can be donated on its own, separate from any boat.
