New Hampshire rules for a boat donation

TITLING AND REGISTRATION AGENCY
New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles
Visit the agency site
Registration
The New Hampshire DMV registers boats. Titles depend on the boat; we confirm with you.
Out-of-state owners
Many Winnipesaukee boats belong to Massachusetts owners and are registered there.
Trailers
Trailers are registered through the DMV.
Lost title or registration
The owner on record can usually get a duplicate from New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. If the boat was never retitled after a sale, or the owner has passed away, tell us and we will point you to the right forms.
Coast Guard documented vessels
Documented boats transfer through the National Vessel Documentation Center with a bill of sale, not a New Hampshire title. Some documented boats are also registered with the state for use here.

New Hampshire boat donation questions

My boat is on Winnipesaukee but registered in Massachusetts. Which rules apply?

Massachusetts, since that is where it is registered. We follow those rules for the paperwork.

Can you pick up a classic wooden boat from a lake camp?

Yes. Classic runabouts from Winnipesaukee camps are common donations. Tell us about the wood and the engine.

Can you pick up from a marina winter storage building?

Yes, during the marina's working hours, since its forklift or trailer crew usually brings the boat out.

When is the best time of year to donate a boat in New Hampshire?

At fall haul-out on the lakes, before winter storage. That said, you can donate any time of year.

State rules change. We confirm current requirements when we handle your paperwork. We do not provide tax or legal advice.
