Right after pickup
- Cancel or move your boat insurance
- Give notice on your slip, mooring, or storage agreement
- Keep a copy of the signed title or bill of sale
State notifications
Some states ask sellers to file a notice of sale or transfer. Your state guide explains whether yours does. We handle the new title or registration.
For your taxes
- Form 1098-C from us, generally within 30 days of the sale
- Form 8283 with your return if your noncash gifts exceed $500
- Photos and records of the boat's condition, kept with your tax file
Insurance
Call your insurer after pickup to cancel or remove the boat. Many policies refund the unused premium.
Registration and property tax
In states that tax boats, tell your county or town the boat is gone so you are not billed next year. Keep your copy of the signed title or bill of sale as proof.
Your tax return
When your Form 1098-C arrives, give it to your tax preparer with Form 8283 details. Keep photos of the boat and the signed paperwork with your records.
