Donate or sell worksheet
A rough comparison, not tax advice. It assumes the boat sells for about the same price either way and that you itemize.
What selling really involves
- Photos, a listing, and answering calls and messages
- Showings, sea trials, and buyers who do not show up
- Negotiation, and often a surveyor finding things to fix
- Storage, slip fees, and insurance while you wait
- Title transfer and payment risk on your own
What donating involves
- One short form or a phone call
- Free pickup by our trusted transport team
- We handle the title transfer and tax paperwork
- A deduction, generally the sale price on Form 1098-C, if you itemize
The honest math
A deduction is not cash. Its value to you is roughly the deduction times your tax rate, and only if you itemize. For many owners, selling still wins on dollars. Donation wins when the boat would take months to sell, when carrying costs are high, or when your time is worth more than the difference.
When selling usually wins
- The boat is in demand and in good shape
- You have time to wait for the right buyer
- You do not itemize deductions
- Carrying costs are low, such as a boat on your own property
When donating usually wins
- The boat has sat on the market for months
- Slip, storage, and insurance costs are high
- The boat needs repairs buyers will not pay for
- You are moving, downsizing, or settling an estate
A middle path
Some owners list the boat for a set period, say 60 days, and donate if it has not sold. Setting that deadline in advance keeps the carrying costs from creeping up.
Questions
Will I get more from selling?
Often, if the boat sells quickly at a fair price. The worksheet above helps you compare after carrying costs.
Is the deduction worth it if I take the standard deduction?
Usually not. The deduction for a boat requires itemizing. The 2026 non-itemizer deduction covers cash gifts only.
Can I try to sell first and donate later?
Yes. Many donors do. The longer it sits, the more it costs, so set a deadline.
Should I lower my price or donate?
Compare the net from a lower sale with the tax value of donating and the months of costs you avoid.
Can I donate after a failed sale?
Yes. Many donors do.
