Three common setups
- Titled and registered: sign the trailer title like any vehicle
- Registered only: sign a bill of sale and provide the registration
- Neither: small trailers in some states need no paperwork at all
Missing trailer paperwork
Trailers that came with a boat often never had their own paperwork. If yours is in that situation, tell us. We will explain what your state requires.
Donating a trailer alone
A trailer on its own can be donated if it is roadworthy. See our boat trailer page for details.
Home-built and older trailers
Home-built trailers and very old trailers often lack a VIN. Some states require an inspection to assign one. Tell us if yours has no VIN.
Expired plates
A trailer with expired plates can still be donated. The transporter may need to haul it on a flatbed rather than tow it.
Trailers from out of state
If the trailer is registered in a different state than the boat, tell us both. Each follows its own state's rules.
Questions
Where is the trailer VIN?
Usually on a plate or stamped into the tongue.
Does the trailer need current registration for pickup?
Not always. Towing laws vary, so tell us if the plate is expired.
Is the trailer included in the boat's 1098-C?
When sold together, it is usually included with the boat.
Can I donate a trailer with no paperwork?
Sometimes. It depends on your state.
Does a tandem trailer need brakes?
Many states require brakes above a weight limit. Tell us if yours has them.
