Where your donated boat goes after pickup
Four things can happen to a donated boat. Every one of them ends with your donation helping someone.
Most boats are sold
Most donated boats are sold through brokers or private sales to new owners. We sell carefully rather than dumping boats at auction, because a better sale does more good and, for most donors, sets the deduction.
Some are improved first
When repairs or cleanup will raise a boat's value by more than they cost, we do the work before selling. A boat that sells for more funds more.
Occasionally, a boat goes to work
Now and then a boat is gifted to a rescue squad or another like-minded organization that can put it to use directly.
Sometimes, a day on the water
Donated boats are sometimes used to take kids and veterans out on the water, for a day many of them would not otherwise have.
Questions about what happens next
Where does the money from the sale go?
Net proceeds, what remains after moving, storing, and selling the boat, support Boats with Causes' charitable programs.
Can I request that my boat go to a rescue squad?
You can tell us that matters to you. Whether a boat is placed directly depends on the boat and on current needs.
Will I know what my boat sold for?
Yes. Your Form 1098-C shows the sale date and gross proceeds.
