Rhode Island rules for a boat donation

TITLING AND REGISTRATION AGENCY
Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management
Visit the agency site
Registration
Rhode Island DEM registers boats. Titles depend on the boat; we confirm with you.
Moorings
Harbor moorings are permitted by towns and usually do not transfer with the boat.
Trailers
Trailers are registered through the Rhode Island DMV.
Lost title or registration
The owner on record can usually get a duplicate from Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. If the boat was never retitled after a sale, or the owner has passed away, tell us and we will point you to the right forms.
Coast Guard documented vessels
Documented boats transfer through the National Vessel Documentation Center with a bill of sale, not a Rhode Island title. Some documented boats are also registered with the state for use here.

I’d owned my Catalina for almost twenty years, and the idea of dealing with the title, the marina paperwork, and the haul‑out made me hesitate. Boats with Causes handled every bit of it. No hidden fees, no surprises. The boat was gone in 9 days, and I had an official tax receipt in my inbox before the weekend. I’m genuinely glad it went to a cause that helps families.
