How It Works
About
A pontoon boat at a covered boathouse on a Georgia lake, with tall pines, a red clay bank and a screened-porch lake house at sunset

Donate a boat in Georgia

Georgia boating centers on big reservoirs, Lake Lanier, Allatoona, Oconee, Sinclair, Hartwell, and Clarks Hill, plus the coast from Savannah to the Golden Isles and St. Marys. Pontoons and wake boats dominate the lakes; center consoles and shrimp-boat-country skiffs work the coast.

Georgia rules for a boat donation

TITLING AND REGISTRATION AGENCY
Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division
Visit the agency site
Titles and registration
Georgia DNR registers boats through its Wildlife Resources Division. Georgia does not issue boat titles, so the registration and a bill of sale serve as ownership records.
Trailers
Trailers are registered as vehicles through the county tag office.
Out-of-state boats
Boats on Hartwell and Clarks Hill may be registered in South Carolina. The registering state's rules apply.
Lost title or registration
The owner on record can usually get a duplicate from Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. If the boat was never retitled after a sale, or the owner has passed away, tell us and we will point you to the right forms.
Coast Guard documented vessels
Documented boats transfer through the National Vessel Documentation Center with a bill of sale, not a Georgia title. Some documented boats are also registered with the state for use here.

Boating in Georgia: seasons and storage

The season
The lakes are busiest from April to October; the coast is usable most of the year.
Storage and carrying costs
Covered slips on Lanier and Allatoona are popular; many lake homes have docks. Every month a boat sits unused, those costs keep adding up. Estimate yours.
